Light to Song Project One:

For this project, the professor allowed students to choose a song and design lighting for a live performance.

For this project, I chose the song “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan. I went with this song because I was familiar with it and thought everyone else would be too. I also felt like this song had places for energetic peaks, variability, and transitions.

Inspiration:

For inspiration, I drew on various shades, depictions, and textures of pink from the stage, disco ball, stained-glass window, and water lighting and reflections. I also looked into AI-generated and Pinterest candy-themed rooms for textures and layers. I felt the project relied on my understanding of how pink can be depicted. I also looked at early Dolly Parton performances, Chappell Roan’s live performance of “Pink Pony Club” at the Grammys, and Dancing with the Stars performances for the color pink, as well as different complementary shades of blues, purples, and reds that could give the pinks I was envisioning demotion. Lastly, I wanted the climax to be fun, chaotic, and a house party vibe. So, I looked into roller skating rink and arcade carpeting, disco balls, lighting, and cups to help add to the menagerie of fun chaos that I feel is what “Pink Pony Club” is.
